Experiential Wellness, Elevated: Inside the Rise of the ‘Spa Playground’ at SLS Barcelona

What if a spa wasn’t a place to switch off, but a space to come alive? At SLS Barcelona, Wellness Manager Pedro Catarino is redefining the traditional spa experience with Halcyon, a bold concept that blends science, sensory design and social energy into what he calls a “wellness playground.”

With over two decades of global expertise spanning luxury destinations and iconic brands such as Four Seasons and SHA Wellness Clinic, Pedro brings a fresh perspective to modern wellbeing—one that prioritises both results and experience.

From dermo-hacking treatments to immersive spaces and even the upcoming concept of spa raves, Halcyon Spa is shaping a new era where wellness is not just restorative, but expressive, dynamic and deeply connected to how we live today.

In this exclusive interview, Pedro shares how Halcyon Spa is challenging the conventions of traditional spas, why modern wellness is becoming more social and results-driven, and how innovation, design and sensory storytelling are transforming the way we experience self-care.

Halcyon Spa feels less like a retreat and more like a “wellness playground.” How did you approach redefining what a modern spa experience should feel like?

At Halcyon, we wanted to move away from the traditional idea of a spa as a purely silent, passive retreat. Today’s guest is looking for something more dynamic, more engaging and more personalised. The concept of a “wellness playground” comes from creating a space where guests can explore, experience, and interact with wellbeing in different ways—whether that’s through technology, touch, or atmosphere. It’s about making wellness feel alive, social, and even a little playful, without losing the essence of care and transformation.

The design journey moves from light-filled spaces into more immersive, atmospheric interiors. How does this transition shape the guest’s emotional and sensory experience?

The transition is intentional—it mirrors a journey inward. We start with open, light-filled areas that feel energising and welcoming, and gradually guide guests into deeper, more immersive environments. This shift helps the mind slow down and the senses become more aware. By the time guests reach the treatment spaces, they are already in a more introspective, receptive state, which enhances both the emotional and physical impact of the experience.

Many spas focus on disconnection, yet Halcyon seems to prepare guests to “step back into the spotlight.” How do you balance restoration with confidence-boosting results?

We believe wellness is not about escaping life, but enhancing how you show up in it. At Halcyon, restoration and results go hand in hand. Treatments are designed not only to relax but also to visibly improve the skin, the body, and overall energy. Guests leave feeling recharged, but also more confident—ready to step back into their daily lives, social environments, or special moments with a renewed sense of presence.

Your partnership with SEPAI introduces dermo-hacking and smart-aging into a luxury setting. How is this changing guest expectations around spa treatments?

Guests today are more informed and results-oriented. With SEPAI, we are bringing a highly personalised, science-driven approach into the spa environment. Dermo-hacking and smart-aging shift the focus from generic treatments to targeted solutions. Clients expect visible, measurable outcomes, but they also want the luxury and sensorial aspect. This combination is redefining what people consider a “spa treatment”—it’s no longer just relaxing, it’s transformative and intelligent.

The treatment menu is highly results-driven, from sculpting facials to quick “pre-event” glow rituals. How do you curate offerings for both immediate impact and long-term wellbeing?

It’s about balance and understanding guest intent. Some clients come for an instant effect—a glow, a lift, a boost before an event. Others are looking for a longer wellness journey. We design the menu to offer both: high-impact treatments that deliver visible results quickly, and progressive programs that support long-term skin health and wellbeing. The key is personalisation—guiding each guest toward what they need in that moment, while building a longer-term vision for their wellbeing.

Signature experiences like The Lift and Ray of Light blend technology with multisensory elements. How important is innovation in shaping the future of wellness?

Innovation is essential. Wellness is evolving rapidly, and guests are open to new technologies as long as they are effective and well-integrated. At Halcyon, innovation is not about replacing the human touch, but enhancing it. By combining advanced technology with multisensory design—light, sound, texture—we create experiences that are both high-performance and deeply immersive. This is where the future of wellness lies: at the intersection of science, experience, and emotion.

The spa includes social elements such as “Plus One” experiences. Are you seeing a shift towards more shared or communal wellness rituals?

Absolutely. Wellness is becoming more social. People want to share experiences, whether with friends, partners, or even colleagues. The “Plus One” concept responds to this shift—it allows guests to connect while still enjoying the benefits of treatments. It transforms the spa from a solitary experience into something more inclusive and memorable, without compromising on quality or personalisation.

The thermal area and cenote-inspired pool create a cinematic environment. How do you use space and storytelling to elevate the overall spa journey?

Space is a powerful storytelling tool. Every area of the spa has a purpose and a narrative. The cenote-inspired pool, for example, evokes a sense of mystery and escape, almost transporting guests to another world. By designing spaces that feel immersive and emotionally engaging, we extend the treatment beyond the therapy room. The entire journey becomes an experience—one that guests remember not just physically, but emotionally.

Wellness today often intersects with lifestyle and entertainment. How do you see Halcyon fitting into Barcelona’s broader cultural and social scene?

Barcelona is a city of energy, creativity, and social life. Halcyon fits naturally into that landscape by offering a new way to experience wellness—one that aligns with the city’s lifestyle. We are not separate from the social scene; we are part of it. Whether it’s pre-event treatments, social spa experiences, or innovative concepts, we position wellness as something that complements and enhances modern urban living.

You’re planning to introduce spa raves—an unconventional concept in the wellness space. What inspired this idea, and how do you envision blending relaxation with high-energy social experiences?

The idea comes from rethinking how people connect with wellness. Not everyone resonates with silence and stillness all the time—sometimes energy, music, and movement are just as therapeutic. Spa raves are about creating a controlled, high-energy environment where guests can release stress, socialize, and feel uplifted, while still being within a wellness framework. It’s about contrast—combining relaxation with excitement—and offering a new, unexpected dimension to the spa experience.
