Hotel Review: SLS Barcelona, Spain

Where wellness meets hedonism on Barcelona’s waterfront

Barcelona is a city that thrives on contrasts, old and new, slow mornings and electric nights, culture and coastline. SLS Barcelona captures this spirit with striking precision, offering a stay that balances high-energy glamour with moments of true restoration.

Set along the marina at Port Fòrum, away from the intensity of the city centre yet deeply connected to its rhythm, SLS Barcelona doesn’t follow the traditional wellness hotel formula. Instead of encouraging you to switch off completely, it invites you to recharge, glow and step back into the world feeling better than before.

The arrival: setting the tone

From the moment you arrive, the experience feels theatrical. A pink-neon-lit entrance curves like a runway, hinting at what’s to come, a stay that embraces bold design, playful luxury and a sense of occasion.

Inside, the energy is immediate yet refined. There’s a constant interplay between light and texture, reflection and shadow, creating an environment that feels both dynamic and immersive. It’s not minimal, not understated and that’s exactly the appeal.

The room: a front-row seat to the Marina

My King Room with Marina Views was like a sanctuary with a view, one that immediately anchored the entire stay. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors opened onto a private terrace overlooking the marina, where boats drifted quietly against the backdrop of the Mediterranean.

Inside, the design balanced richness with comfort. Warm timber tones softened mirrored surfaces, while gold accents and subtle artistic details added a layer of personality. It felt luxurious without being overwhelming and designed to be lived in, not just admired.

The bathroom elevated the experience further. White marble, Venetian mirrors, and softly diffused lighting created a space that felt almost spa-like in itself. The addition of Ortigia’s Florio-scented amenities added a sensory layer that lingered, turning everyday routines into something more indulgent.

Everything, from the textures to the layout, felt intentional, reinforcing the idea that this is a hotel designed for both relaxation and preparation. A place where you unwind, but also get ready to step out again.

The Spa: Halcyon’s immersive wellness playground

At the heart of SLS Barcelona’s wellness offering is Halcyon Spa, and it’s here that the hotel’s philosophy truly comes to life.

Unlike traditional spas that encourage retreat and silence, Halcyon is designed as an experience, one that feels immersive, sensory and unapologetically modern.

The journey begins with a striking entrance: a glowing blue tunnel lined with translucent panels that shimmer like water. It’s a moment of transition, where the outside world fades and something more atmospheric takes over.

Inside, the space unfolds gradually. There’s a dedicated relaxation room, a sequence of sauna and steam experiences, and a central thermal area anchored by a circular marble platform beneath a softly illuminated ceiling.

The highlight is a cenote-inspired pool, complete with a gentle rain feature and digital backdrops that shift the mood of the space. It feels less like a spa and more like stepping into a carefully choreographed environment, one that engages all the senses.

Halcyon has partnered with Barcelona-born skincare brand SEPAI, known for its dermo-hacking and smart-aging approach. The result is a treatment menu that feels both luxurious and highly results-driven, blending science, technology, and touch.

From sculpting facials to deep-release massages and targeted body treatments, everything is designed with one goal in mind: to enhance how you look and feel long after you leave.

The treatment: a moment of complete reset

My treatment, a deeply relaxing massage, was one of the standout moments of my stay.

From the beginning, there was a sense of intention. The therapist worked with slow, fluid movements that felt intuitive rather than mechanical, gradually releasing tension without ever feeling rushed.

What made the experience particularly memorable was the addition of a LED mask towards the end of the massage. While my body was being eased into a state of deep relaxation, the mask worked quietly on my face, delivering targeted light therapy to boost radiance and rejuvenation.

This combination, hands-on therapy paired with advanced technology, created a layered experience. Physically, it was grounding and restorative. Visually, there was an immediate sense of brightness and glow.

It’s rare to find a treatment that feels both deeply calming and results-driven at the same time, but this managed to strike that balance effortlessly.

Beyond this, the spa’s menu offers a range of standout experiences. The Lift focuses on sculpting and firming through advanced 3D light technology, while Ray of Light combines skincare, aromatherapy, and music for a multisensory reset. For those short on time, The Fast & The Fabulous delivers visible results in just 30 minutes, which is perfect before an evening out.

Wellness meets energy: the rise of spa raves

Perhaps one of the most unexpected and exciting elements of Halcyon Spa is what’s coming next: spa raves.

Blending wellness with music and social energy, these upcoming events aim to redefine how we experience relaxation. It’s a concept that feels perfectly aligned with SLS’s identity, where wellness isn’t about withdrawal, but about connection, expression and enjoyment.

Dining: a Mediterranean journey at Lora

Dinner at Lora brought a different kind of indulgence, one rooted in flavour, warmth, and shared experience.

The restaurant’s concept draws inspiration from Mediterranean coastal towns, and that sense of place is reflected in both the menu and the atmosphere.

I started with spinach borani paired with Kubaneh bread, a dish that felt both comforting and elevated. The richness of the borani balanced perfectly with the soft, slightly sweet bread, creating a simple yet memorable opening.

The highlight of the meal though was the whole grilled sea bass, perfectly tender, with a delicate smokiness that enhanced rather than overpowered its natural flavour. It was one of those dishes that speaks to quality and technique, uncomplicated but executed flawlessly.

The setting added to the experience. Warm lighting, textured interiors, and a subtle buzz created an atmosphere that felt lively yet intimate, equally suited for a relaxed dinner or a longer, more social evening.

Beyond Lora, SLS offers a host of other innovative venues. Kyara is a cocktail bar that blends perfumery and craft in an immersive, otherworldly space. Cosmico features floating sushi boats, distinctive cocktails, rooftop pools, and electrifying day-to-night beats, framed by sweeping views of the marina and city. Deluxe transitions from a stylish café to a sleek lounge bar, serving craft beers and bold bites beneath a crystal-and-pearl-studded chandelier, while Coral, the elevated pool bar, channels sun-soaked beach vibes and is reserved exclusively for guests.

Resort amenities: leisure and lifestyle

The resort’s amenities are equally impressive. On the first floor, an infinity pool overlooks the marina, surrounded by chic sun loungers and cabanas that invite lazy afternoons or sociable gatherings. Two additional rooftop pools provide a “see and be seen” backdrop, with curated music and private cabanas that make every visit feel special.

Guests can make a sartorial splash with exclusive swimwear from SLS’s collaboration with Barcelona-based brand Caro Luna. Fitness enthusiasts are well-catered for with a 24/7 light-filled gym and spin studio, while complimentary hotel bikes provide a healthy way to explore the city. A partnership with Edan Studios, founded by Anna Lewandowska, offers bespoke classes and wellness sessions on-site, allowing guests to balance indulgence with movement seamlessly.

The Verdict

SLS Barcelona is not a traditional wellness retreat and that’s exactly what makes it so compelling. It’s a place where restoration and stimulation coexist, where you can spend the afternoon in a deeply immersive spa and the evening enjoying world-class dining or rooftop energy.

With Halcyon Spa leading the way, offering innovative treatments, sensory design and even the promise of spa raves, this is wellness reimagined for a new era. One that embraces both stillness and celebration.

For those craving more than just relaxation, an experience that rejuvenates the body, uplifts the spirit and leaves you glowing from within, SLS Barcelona offers an unforgettable escape like no other. I’ll definitely be back.
